Chorlton chess club and a close friend to many in the manchester league in the 90's and early 2000's
Paul shand (real name John Paul Scott) passed away recently.
A Prime mover in chorlton "Crazy gang team" of some 15 years ago, he managed to turn an ok team, to a strong team to challange the like of 3c's and Bolton. he managed to get players like Paul Macklin, Bob Lothian, Phil Crocker, V Lediaev, Tracy Thompson and other class players to join chorlton. Paul lasting legacy to the club - apart from some fiendishly well contrived attacks over the board - will be the only workable Hapidcap system still being used for the club championship
He alsao produced a readable and thouroughly-researched Manchester chess federation handbook.
Paul was an one off with his pill box hat with tassle.
he will be miss by all

Re: Paul Shand
Should just add - the info John Reyes posted above came originally from local author/historian and Chorlton member Graham Phythian on the club Facebook page - thanks to John for re-posting it here for a wider chess audience. Details are scarce, but we'll add anything else we hear.
