Richard Almond

Post by Sean Hewitt » Sat Mar 23, 2013 3:23 pm

I received the very sad news today that Richard Almond passed away yesterday. A regular in the e2e4 team, and an active and popular player in the South East he will, I know, be sorely missed. RIP Richard.

Oh my God, that is terrible news. He can't have been very old.

My condolences.

Ach, that is indeed sad news. I didn't know him, but I played him in the 4NCL last year, which is why the name rang a bell for me (and looking at a picture of him allowed me to put a face to the name). My condolences as well.

Richard was 46. Wasn't he in the army? May be wrong

Desperately sad news. Didn't know Richard well but we played 3 or 4 times and he was a perfect gentleman. RIP.

I was getting confused. Richard was not an army man.

BCM has noted
Obituary
Richard J. Almond (4 i 1967-??). Strong English County player. At the 2006 European Individual he drew with two IMs and one GM. Second at Paignton Ron Bruce Premier, 2009. Hastings & St Leonard’s CC Champion 2009-10. In the 2010 British Championship he scored 5/11.

Can anybody help with his place of birth, death and exact date of passing? I would be very grateful.

Terrible news, Richard was a fine player and servant of chess as captain of Hastings and the Sussex county team. RIP Richard.

Date of death Saturday 23 March (not Friday 22 as originally reported in early confusion). Natural causes (probable heart attack) while travelling to 4NCL.

Funeral at Hastings Crematorium on Monday 15 April, 12:30 p.m.

How very sad. No age at all. Sussex chess has lost a fine stalwart. My condolences.

I've been sent the link to an article that appeared in the local paper: http://www.hastingsobserver.co.uk/commu ... -1-4949082

On a more personal note Richard was one on my first ever coaches when I was only 7 or so. He helped me a great deal with my chess over the course of a few years and I always got on well with him. It's very sad news indeed.
