Some of a certain age will remember him for his Master Game appearances.

Or indeed his role in the 1972 Spassky-Fischer World Championship Match. Sad news, though maybe some here will have anecdotes or recollections to share. Schmid certainly touched on a lot of areas, including chess history with his famous collections.
