Milan Matulovic (1935-2013)

Post by Richard James » Wed Oct 09, 2013 10:17 pm

Serbia Chess is reporting that GM Milan Matulovic, a controversial figure in the 60s and 70s, has died after a long illness.

http://www.serbiachess.net/ gives the report: the English version gives you an error message but you can copy the text into Google Translate should you wish.

I preferred to avoid the blatant self-publicity.

I remember this guy from Birmingham (1975). But what a complete sh!t.

As Nigel Short said (on F/b), on hearing the news:

"They say only speak good of the dead. He's dead? Good!"

He has achieved immortality, but not in the way that he would have wished. Long after his name has faded from living memory, the nickname of "J'adoubovic", will last forever.
Sadly, not missed by most of his fellow grandmasters. Let him R.I.P.

Also gained a bit of a reputation for playing on in ridiculously lost positions when he felt affronted in some way.

(there are a few examples in early Informators, IIRC)

Still, nobody is all bad - and in his defence he seemed to mellow in old age. As others have said, RIP.

Matt, think it used to be said that Matulovic liked to adjourn his lost positions. This meant that his score would show as, for example, 4/7 with 4 adjourned rather than 4/11!

Of course, that was in the bad old days when we had adjournments !

Did he actually say that or it's some kind of sick joke?

It's correctly quoted. I gave some thought to whether I should have quoted it at all. It was a close call. But I found the comment amusing - as acerbic comments in poor taste often can be if we're honest - certainly not 'sick'. On balance, I'd guess Nigel sums things up pretty well, albeit brutally.

It is truly extraordinary, that the Editor of the Sunday Telegraph permitted those highly inflammatory comments to be published.

Not when you consider who the Editor was.
