Thank you for the news, Richard.

I met Dan Mayers for the last time in 2010 at Skokie, Illinois. Please see my post at http://www.ecforum.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=1578.

Knew Dan very well. Played for Hampstead over many years. A USCF Master, he always dressed shabbily, even though he was a multi-millionaire. He would brew his own Japanese tea, a rare blend that he took with him, whenever he played chess. He was a mining expert who worked for Tiny Rowland (LONRHO), in Zambia.

Not a bad epitaph for a chess player. It also underlines that the royal game has many individuals. Staunton, by contrast, dressed smartly but was usually broke.

Nice guy, whom I oft visited at his Wadhurst home.
