Knew Dan very well. Played for Hampstead over many years. A USCF Master, he always dressed shabbily, even though he was a multi-millionaire. He would brew his own Japanese tea, a rare blend that he took with him, whenever he played chess. He was a mining expert who worked for Tiny Rowland (LONRHO), in Zambia.

Not a bad epitaph for a chess player. It also underlines that the royal game has many individuals. Staunton, by contrast, dressed smartly but was usually broke.A USCF Master, he always dressed shabbily, even though he was a multi-millionaire.

Nice guy, whom I oft visited at his Wadhurst home.
