Re: Peter Hugh Clarke
The obituary says Peter played in the British Championship nearly every year for 30 years, up to 1982.
My quiz question is what did he win to qualify for the 1980 championship? (The answer, fairly obviously, is not a game of chess.)

Re: Peter Hugh Clarke
The question was obviously far too easy. The coin toss followed 6 drawn games against me in the BCQC, after which there was no more time to play any more games.IM Jack Rudd wrote:A coin toss?

Re: Peter Hugh Clarke
On a minor note, I believe that Peter, and his wife Margaret (Wood), hold the long distance travel record, for playing in a tournament within the British Isles. In 1995, they travelled from their home in Morwenstow, Cornwall, to take part in a tournament at Stornoway, Isle of Lewis.
Anyone care to challenge this record ?

Re: Peter Hugh Clarke
Peter's books on Tal and of course his 'Russian Chess Miniatures'
are two of my never shall I part with books.
I know Peter himself said he thought his best book was his
on Petrosian but the Tal book is right up.

Re: Peter Hugh Clarke
Always known as PH Clarke, he regularly competed in the British Championships, often finishing in second place during the 1960's. His good friend Jonathan Penrose, regularly won the Championship during that period. He has been criticized for not winning enough tournaments, often being content to accept a draw.
Chess must have been in his blood, since he married Margaret, the daughter of BH Wood.

He was easily IM strength by today's standards.
