It would seem that he died in Las Vegas, after playing his second favourite game.

Very sad indeed. He was to the end a big character in chess, as well as poker, and I would have guessed that he had many more years ahead of him.

Wow, what a shock! No age to go either. RIP.

He looked somewhat older than his 65 years, in that interview with Yasser Seirawan. May have been suffering from an unidentified illness.

Indeed, he looked very drawn and frail and seemed to have a bit of a twitch (you can see his mouth moving involenteraly) I wonder if he had early Parkinsons. I expect it will come out in time.

In his youth, he played an eleven round Open at Southport in 1969 when he was already an IM or IM elect from his result in a Zonal representing Australia. Perhaps standards in British chess were already getting higher, as he only came 5th, losing to John Carleton in the last round. The winner was Danny Wright.

I remember watching Walter play Louis de Veauce at five minute chess for money at Bognor in 1968. There are some games from this tournament on line at Britbase including a win for Walter over Stewart Reuben.
