Curious ..... no mention in that Telegraph obit of how he saved the 1972 Fischer-Spassky match by doubling the prize-fund.
"The chess-board is the world ..... the player on the other side is hidden from us ..... he never overlooks a mistake, or makes the smallest allowance for ignorance."
(He doesn't let you resign and start again, either.)

Yes I thought that was odd. Leaving chess out altogether I could understand, but since they do mention his interest in the game it’s strange that there was no mention of the Reykjavik

Re: Jim Slater
Jim Slater joined B.H. Woods Postal Chess Club in 1966. By 1969 he had reached Premier 2 level, just two steps below the Championship. At 14 years of age he joined the West London Club. He was also a frequent visitor to the Gambit Rooms in the City of London.
He joined the Athenaeum Club in 1965, but found OTB play too tiring after a hard day at the Office.
He played a very important role in saving the 1972 World Championship. He deposited the sum of £50,000 with F.I.D.E., which was enough to satisfy Fischer's demands.

Interesting to read of fortune tellers´ prognostications.
In his autobiography Return To Go (which I recommend) he stated that he believed some people really can see the future.
My wife echoed that in her autobiographical work Journeys In The Underworld.
