Tommy Dunne was a great school chess organiser. In 1949 he join the teaching staff of Glyn Grammar School in Epsom and became Head of Maths early in the 1950s, a role that he kept until 1989. He started a fledgling chess club which became so successful that Glyn was the top chess playing school in Surrey for decades. Chess was so popular at the school that they would hire coaches to take multiple team to away matches. In 1976 Glyn were third in in the National Schools’ Tournament and the following year second. Another year their B team was so strong that they reached the final 4. Tommy was also the Junior Co-ordinator for the Surrey County Chess Association from 1955 to 1986.

He did an enormous amount of work. Surrey CCA has a Tommy Dunne Trophy for the best performance by a junior in the league competitions, so happily he received suitable tribute whilst still alive.
