Sad to hear of the death of Arturo Pomar. I still remember seeing him playing Harry Golombek at the Sunday Chronicle Chess Tournament in London in 1946. Of course, that was the only time I ever saw him. In those days it was vary rare for a youngster of that age to be playing in a top tournament. Probably not so rare these days.

Strange game, that. Golombek went a whole piece up after 44 moves, but needed another 44 to score the point! Having just played it quickly through here, I get the impression he was anxious not to muck it up against the young 'un, and took it more cautiously than was maybe necessary. Some years later, HG quoted the last few moves (in The Game Of Chess) as an example of how to win with 2 Ps against 1.
