Jim Whitaker

On another thread I mentioned Jim Whitaker, a stalwart of Wakefield Chess Club and a well known figure across Yorkshire. I was sorry to learn of his death earlier this year.

I played Jim a few times and was always struck by his clear passion for the game, his sense of team spirit and his general good nature. He was actively playing for Wakefield well into his nineties, occasionally playing opponents who were over eighty years younger. It is strange to imagine Wakefield B without him and I regret I never got a chance to talk to him about his memories of Yorkshire chess, which must have been extensive.
