I've just learned that George Parker passed away on 16th April 2017. He had been SCCU President from 1989 to 1991 and had founded and run the Bourne End one day Congress from the 1970s until around twenty years ago. He had also been both Chairman and Secretary of the Bourne End club at various times as well as Chairman of the Bucks County Association.
In recent years, he had retired from active chess playing and organisation. but was still a regular fixture in the bar at the local community centre where we play.
(edit) Back in the early 1970s, he and his family offered hospitality to the Hartstons (as then then were) during the Marlow Congress. A story or two of his featured in Hartston's "How to Cheat at Chess" and "Soft Pawn", suitably disguised of course. (/edit)
