William Lombardy
It's being reported that he has died in California.

Re: William Lombardy
It seems his last years were spent in rather reduced circumstances, which is terribly sad - especially for such an iconic figure of US chess.

Re: William Lombardy
This is truly shocking news that the late GM William Lombardy, should have ended his life in such dire straits. In the 1957 World Junior Championships held at Toronto, Canada, he astonished the chess world by winning all eleven games.
Know that he was in financial difficulties during his last years, struggling to pay the rent for his Manhattan Apartment. He moved to California during the last stage of his life, and ended up living in a Subway. This was the man who Fischer appointed as his Second, for the 1972 World Championship Match against Boris Spassky.

And in 1960 he crushed Spassky in the student olympiad - on the Black side of a Sicilian. This was a key result in winning the US team the gold medals, and the Soviet authorities took a very dim view of what had happened - some don't think BVS was totally trusted by them ever again.Gordon Cadden wrote:This is truly shocking news that the late GM William Lombardy, should have ended his life in such dire straits.
