European Senior Team Championships Dresden 2022

Post by Tim Harding » Sun Oct 23, 2022 10:37 am

This event starts on Thursday so most people will be travelling on Wednesday: three English teams in each section, a Scottish 65+ team, three Irish (one in the 50+ and two in 65+) but no Welsh unfortunately.

Weather in Dresden for the next two weeks looks better than expected. (Earlier this year somebody said in another Senior thread that they wouldn't go because it would be cold and wet.)
Quite warm to start with and little rain predicted.
Cooler towards the end of the tournament:

Looking forward to seeing some old friends.

Think this is 65+.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

They probably will be but definitive team composition, board order and seedings will only be settled at the captains' meeting on Thursday morning.

First round (of 9) Thursday afternoon at 1400 UK time, 1500 local. The final round on 4 November is scheduled for 1200.

The championship reaches midway today. England Over 50s play 3rd seeds Slovakia today, having beaten the 2nd and 4th seeds in the last 2 rounds. Live on chess24 ( and possibly elsewhere) 3pm CET.

As a treat England 2 will be live as well today. The Over 65s have some catching up to do.

English language links are back.

65+: http://chess-results.com/tnr690436.aspx?lan=1&art=0

Another great result by top seeds England 1 in the 50+ section leaves then in the outright lead with four rounds to play, having beaten the 2nd, 3rd and 4th seeds.

That's Hebden, Arkell, Emms and Flear sweeping all aside and unbeaten so far on every board. Chris Baker as reserve board just played in the first round and won as well.

Looks like England 1 are favourites to win all nine rounds now. Might even end up playing England 2 at some point. Best of luck to both teams for the remaining rounds!

Emms & Flear have drawn; it isn't clear to me how Keith can win, although as he's played g4 (his favourite move) I assume he's happy; Mark appears to be fairly level but well ahead on the clock

Slovakia standing better against Germany

A draw for Keith guarantees England 1st place otherwise I'm sure he'd have happily found a way to play on.

Very wise to take the draw. It would have been tragic if the team had come this far and then had a nasty accident.

Slovakia had kindly sealed the deal for us by defeating Germany.

Only England 2 now stand in the way of all the England 1 players going through the event unbeaten. On the other hand, England 2 might get a medal themselves - if they beat England 1 and England 3 beat Berlin 1.

Chess24 and Chess-Results both say that Round 9 starts at 0900 GMT.
