We're in some trouble now. Nunn missed a strong chance and has instead gone into a rook ending just a doubled pawn up, while Hebden and Flear remain level with zeitnot looming.

Writing some time later, Flear's game is not level either.

Agreed. Does anyone have anything beyond move 26 for Mark's game?Jonathan Rogers wrote:Writing some time later, Flear's game is not level either.

Argh, and Tieschbierek had actually let Flear back into it in time trouble too. I think most people would have played the computer move 38...Qxb4, even in time trouble and even without seeing all the possible tactics. You take things and create threats in time trouble, especially when you're losing?!
Perhaps our guys are affected by Brexit? I can't imagine that people like Nunn, who rather like evidence-based thinking, are unaffected by what has just happened.

0.5-2.5 now, with Hebden's game still frozen at move 26.

Ah, chessplayers (cerebral, intellectual - supposedly) affected by Brexit?Jonathan Rogers wrote:Perhaps our guys are affected by Brexit? I can't imagine that people like Nunn, who rather like evidence-based thinking, are unaffected by what has just happened.
Footballers? I've not seen anyone suggest that, but I think it is as good a theory as any.

Cerebral, intellectual, and in a job which regularly requires people representing different countries to all take part in the same event. That one might be the clincher.

Yes, I thought that about the football too.Jonathan Rogers wrote: Perhaps our guys are affected by Brexit? I can't imagine that people like Nunn, who rather like evidence-based thinking, are unaffected by what has just happened.

Really not so sure about the footballers! If nothing else, their thousands of supporters were probably in a particularly upbeat mood.

A convincing win for Mark today to take him to 4.5/5.

Did his opponent have something better to do this morning?LawrenceCooper wrote:A convincing win for Mark today to take him to 4.5/5.

A comfortable 3.5-0.5 win but what may prove to be a crucial round 6 pairing against Armenia. The double colour is slightly unfortunate as I suspect we would have preferred white on odd boards albeit that didn't work out in round 4.
