EU Senior Individual Champs 2017 Barcelona, 11-21 Aug

Post by Tim Harding » Thu Feb 23, 2017 10:51 am

I enquired of the ECU office for more particulars of the above event and received a prompt reply, quoting an email they received from the organisers.
The dates published are definitive. We have transfer to Barcelona Airport to Sabadell official hotels.
The tournament will played in Sabadell, very near from Barcelona. In public transportation, 20 minutes to Barcelona center.
Yes. We have air conditioned in the playing hall.
The regulations will sent to ECU on March, 6th. If we have your OK, we will published on March 10th.
This implies as usual nine rounds, with 11 and 21 August being the travel dates.
I think it is probable there will be two tournaments (50+ open and 65+ open) with separate prizes for the women (if enough enter).

Do you have inside information or are you just relying on the ECU website?

The FIDE calendar just says "Norway." There are still no dates.

At LAST year's World Senior Teams we were told by Dirk Jordan and Johann Poecksteiner that Norway had been chosen for the 2018 event and that the venue and dates would be announced at the 2016 FIDE Congress in Baku. We are still waiting. Perhaps they will announce it at Barcelona.

It will be an expensive event no doubt, especially for people who like to drink.
Still I may play depending on the venue, dates and special rates that are quoted.

I have decided not to go to Barcelona because
(a) it will be very hot;
b) Sabadell is too far from the centre, and with rounds in the afternoon, there will be no real chance to enjoy what the city has to offer,

The ECU Calendar for 2018 at http://www.europechess.org/calendar/2018-2/ confirms the venue as Oslo, but gives no dates

The starting list for the event that starts in a couple of days time. Very poorly supported, despite being so close to Barcelona. A few England entrants but presumably too close to the British Championships to attract Keith Arkell I guess.

Keith's playing in a different event that overlaps.

Indeed, who needs Barcelona when you've got the delights of the MCCU Congress at West Bromwich.

Round 1 today at 4pm local time (3pm BST).

Airport strikes at Barcelona could have been a disincentive to prospective late entrants; I'm relieved I decided not to go.

English players in the 50+ (field of 51) are: Neil Crickmore and Peter Gayson. Both will play Spaniards rated in the 1800-1900 range.

Four in the 65+ (field of 66):
Michael Stokes, Ivan Myall, and Norman Hutchinson all play lower-rated opponents.
Brian Hewson plays IM Nils-Gustav Renman on board 3; I'm not sure if it will be live online.

Along with the delights of my first ever trip to the Middle East, on Thursday.

Obviously there is terrible news coming in Barcelona at present. Do we know if any of the participants in the Senior Championships are affected (a club colleague of mine is playing)?

Interestingly his game is the only one from the round today (which started at 16.00) not showing a result although he has been paired in tomorrow's round with the same score suggesting that he lost.

So far there is nothing to suggest any British nationals were involved or that the Senior Chess Championship was affected by the atrocity. But it would be good to know for certain.

The player concerned is only an occasional email user when he is at home but I have emailed a friend locally to ask if he's heard anything.

Update - he appears to have defaulted his game yesterday which is slightly concerning. If today's results suggest something similar I will contact the organisers direct. That said, if anybody involved in the competition is reading this and can confirm that all participants are ok I would appreciate it.

And a further update; his round 7 game shows a loss rather than a loss by default which seems to suggest he is safe and well.
