Ealing FIDE Congresses

Post by Roger de Coverly » Tue Nov 15, 2022 7:30 pm

There's a new series of monthly tournaments come into existence on the ECF calendar

https://londonchesscongresss.godaddysit ... e-congress

A couple of points would put me off and perhaps other possible entrants.
Default time - 15 min
A lethal mix when combined with London traffic or public transport.
Round 1: Saturday 10:00 am Round 2 : Saturday 1:30 pm Round 3: Saturday 5:00 pm Round 4: Sunday 09:00 am Round 5: Sunday 12:30 pm Closing : 3:30 pm
The time control is 60 30, so the time between rounds is cutting it a bit fine. Other congresses have risked the thirty minute turn round, but a 9 am start on a Sunday !!!.

The time control has the advantage of making three games on a Saturday less tiring than with slower controls

A 9 o'clock start effectively excludes anyone from outside London.

At least you would finish early on the Saturday evening even if playing all three rounds

There is also a congress at Mill Hill the same weekend.

Mill Hill's round times are
Three rounds on Saturday (10.30am, 2pm and 5.30pm), Sunday (11am and 2.30pm).
Far more civilised.

Certainly more time to attend morning mass.

Three rounds in a day with a 30" increment satisfies my definition of insanity. I realise that it makes the arbiter's life easier, but surely there are limits to that.

I once had a very long game (over 100 moves) with this time limit at one of Adam Raoof's tournaments.

I wouldn't have wanted the increment to have been anything less than 30 seconds. (For clarity, I was playing, not arbiting.)

Each according to their own, I suppose.

I'm sure you wouldn't, but did you give a thought to how the other players may have felt about it?

I don't understand. Adam Raoof runs a lot of tournaments with this time limit and they seem to be popular.

What issue have I not considered?

He's been running tournaments with that move rate for quite a few years. Previously restricted to under 2200, now under 2400.
