Now that the fad for FIDE rating has infected this tournament, for clarification (I'm hazy on rules for FIDE rated rapidplays) does this mean that

1) the top two sections are now closed to non-ECF members
2) mobile phone defaults are necessarily reintroduced?

I would expect that (1) applies, although the entry form doesn't mention this. What is the ECF's policy on a player with an inactive Standard play rating taking part in a rated Rapid-Play? Will it suspend both ratings before the new Rapid-Play rating is even published?

As predicted by the ECF CEO, it leads to a polarisation. You may get members of the ECF playing more, but non-members not playing at all. Personally I would think the ECF, the chess economy anyway, healthier if you had 10,000 players playing an average of 10 games each, rather than 5,000 players playing an average of 20. I don't think the ECF agrees with this, or rather their actions don't.

I can't comment on Richmond, but the Birmingham Rapidplay FIDE-rated its Open section, and will do so again in October.

All English players, or players without a FIDE-nationality need to be ECF members. Others don't.

The organisers of Richmond don't say this, but their rule change is that players who are strong enough to be required to play in the top two sections will be required to pay £27 on top of their Richmond entry fee. Against that, they may get players with existing ratings wishing to establish or improve a rapid-play rating. Polarisation again. Even if league players in London and the surrounding areas are compelled to take out memberships next season, that still won't allow them to play Richmond without an extra £15 to the ECF. It might be that it's not an issue, but entry form silence isn't a good sign. In another thread Paul suggested that players just wanted to know who they had to pay and how much to pay. So for players in London leagues(in the collective sense), it would be £ 12, but £ 27 if you want to play the odd Richmond or Golders Green rapid-play in the top sections.

I assume organisers know and understand this, or is it only a handful?
