THANET CHESS CONGRESS

Post by David Gilbert » Fri Aug 01, 2014 1:42 pm

Just a few weeks to go until the start of the excellent Thanet Chess Congress that takes place at the University Campus in Broadstairs. It runs from Friday, 15 August 2014 until Sunday, 17 August 2014. There are four sections: an Open; Under-170; Under-145; and Under-120. Each section incorporates a Kent Individual title. As usual Kevin Thurlow will be keeping score. Come and play chess!

Should this maybe go in the Congress Diary forum? :)

"What mobile phone and electronic device rules will be applied?"

I will be the arbiter and Thanet inform me that they will be guided by me. But just in case they don't like what I say, I will send them my thoughts and assuming they agree, I will post those thoughts here. I think it's crazy to totally ban phones etc from the venue for such an event.

David is right - the tournament is very good and there's plenty of space at present.

Hi Kevin.

I am looking to play. I need a room for 2 nights. Any space at the Venue Accommodation? Thanks.

Hi Brendan, I tried that first. No luck. :( Nothing in price range anyway or too far.

Lee. I hear that some of the University staff have been giving out the wrong message about the availability of rooms on the campus. Apparently as of this morning there were a few rooms still available. So try again (early!) tomorrow morning, you may have better luck.

Sorry Lee - have been away a few days. There is normally accommodation at the venue, but August is refurbishment time for universities so it may be limited.

I have proposed to the organizers that phones etc. must be switched off during play, and that if the phone (etc) makes a noise or is used or is clearly switched on, you lose. Some players still seem to think you can go outside and use the phone during play...

The old 10.2 is now appendix G4, where if the player claims a draw in the last 2 minutes, they can ask for Fischer timing to be used to finish the game. Luckily , the arbiter can refuse this option, so all such requests will be declined - there are not enough digital clocks and it is not feasible to fiddle around with clocks when there are other time-scrambles going on. Also, three different rooms are used for the tournament, so I cannot be everywhere at the same time, with a collection of digital clocks carried round my neck! So basically, old-style 10.2 will be used.
