Here's a website that states there is a public wifi connection for guests and how to access it:

http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/services/its/ ... ick-guest/

I'm waiting to hear back from a reliable source about the standard of coverage (particularly in halls).

Afternoon friends
I was hoping to see Yang-Fan Zhou, Alan Merry and Marcus Harvey in the championship wonder why they have not entered so far?

In the Summertime when the weather is hot. Nine hundred and seventy entries today. Wow, it’s going to be enormous! The University of Warwick currently sits in 7th place in the standings since 1989 and it can only go higher. It’ll be scintillating!

2013 Torquay 1187
2003 Edinburgh 1009
1997 Hove 1001
1999 Scarborough 986
1989 Plymouth 989
2002 Torquay 973
2015 University of Warwick 970 (still a few days to enter)
1998 Torquay 963
2001 Scarborough 960
2011 Sheffield 951
2004 Scarborough 940
2009 Torquay 935
1994 Norwich 933
1992 Plymouth 933
1990 Eastbourne 926
1995 Swansea 923
1991 Eastbourne 921
2010 Canterbury 891
1996 Nottingham 877
2012 North Shields 854
2007 Great Yarmouth 824
2014 Aberystwyth 819
2006 Swansea 768
1993 Dundee 773
2008 Liverpool 742
2000 Street 711
2005 Isle of Man 503

Don’t forget to print off your Parking Permits from the website if you need them.

If you’re not entered yet, or maybe you’ve been grounded for not cleaning your room or something, why not sneak-out for one of the Rapidplays this weekend or plump for the Blitz or standard play Weekender over the middle weekend. Oh joy!

Amazing - the entry list has been revised upwards again. The count is now 999. It includes GM Tamas Fodor in the Major Open. Who's not getting ready for Warwick?

It’s unofficial, but entry levels at the 2015 British Championships are now the second highest on record. If they continue to rise at the same rate Warwick could yet go close to overtaking the dizzy figures we counted at Torquay in 2013.

2013 Torquay 1187
2015 University of Warwick 1014 (get in!)
2003 Edinburgh 1009
1997 Hove 1001
1999 Scarborough 986
1989 Plymouth 989
2002 Torquay 973
1998 Torquay 963
2001 Scarborough 960
2011 Sheffield 951
2004 Scarborough 940
2009 Torquay 935
1994 Norwich 933
1992 Plymouth 933
1990 Eastbourne 926
1995 Swansea 923
1991 Eastbourne 921
2010 Canterbury 891
1996 Nottingham 877
2012 North Shields 854
2007 Great Yarmouth 824
2014 Aberystwyth 819
2006 Swansea 768
1993 Dundee 773
2008 Liverpool 742
2000 Street 711
2005 Isle of Man 503

Don’t you just love chess. If you’re not yet entered, come and play. The University has extended room bookings until midnight tonight. They must be busy.

So exciting. Remember to bring your hat.

David,

How much time have you spent in the sun recently?

Come 7pm every day will the campus go into shutdown mode and everyone will retreat to their rooms?

Hopefully there will be a lively atmosphere on campus even after 7pm.

7pm, everyone will be watching Keith Arkell's Rook and pawn ending.

Hopefully there will be a lively atmosphere on campus even after 7pm.

It'll be rocking. Bring on the Sambuca.

Its interesting with what could be a record turnout that the Major Open so far totals just 35 entries which would be the same as North Shields in 2012 and the least attended British ever on the Isle of Man in 2005. Time for a long overdue change there I think.

Overall though I would suggest that the benefit of an accessible central England venue has been completely justified in terms of numbers despite some misgivings earlier about it not being your normal seaside holiday venue.

Yes, it would be interesting to see some analysis of how many entrants are at the British for the first time, and how many are within commuting distance of the venue

The numbers in the Under 16 aren't exactly huge either. By contrast in 1970 also at Warwick, a tournament for Over 50s attracted just 6 entrants. The Major Open had 40, but had been split into two, with a "First Class" of 34 alongside.

There's been a definite trend over recent years of players entering more than one event. Before the ECF goes too far in self-congratulation, it ought to count distinct individuals as well and filter for the effect of new and short events such as the Blitz.

Roger,

I've attempted to discover the number of unique individuals entering at least one event in vain.

Perhaps disclosing this information is unwelcome?

Comparing this number year-on-year would reveal another dimension to the take-up.

I've downloaded the list of entrants to a spreadsheet and done a bit of reformatting to enable me to count the names.

Using
List of entries as at 16:44 Thu 23 Jul 2015.
Total entries 1031.
I make it 694 distinct people so that's 337 additional entries.
