With representatives from 13 Federations and still over 2 weeks to go, this would be a good warm up for anyone playing at the British.

Thanks for the link to the live games, Matthew.

Interesting field that includes forumites IM Jack Rudd and GM Keith Arkell.

Jack is only 10th seed, so not live today. Keith is on board 3.

Wow, glad I'm here rather than at the Kings place Rapid: They had 10 GMs , we've got 6. First prize same at both. Nothing for 3rd place there, here there are 4 place prizes, and here you get fees and hotel, whereas, I believe, there you had to fend for yourself.

I suppose it depends how you calculate the value of your time. You could spend 5-9 days and potentially 45 hours or more playing chess in the hope of winning outright, or you could spend one day and less than six hours playing time and win the same amount of money and be home that evening. Accepted, no titled players got any appearance fees but they did get a free entry. Is it normal for players to get conditions for one-day rapidplays?

It's rare, of course, Adam, and no criticism of your event is intended. I was merely thinking aloud about the comparative options, from my own perspective. To play in a one day Rapidplay, in comfort, in London would set me back about £200 in travel and accom ( £100 rail + 2 nights hotel).

This is also the reason why, 12 years ago, I pretty much gave up weekend chess (that is, apart from when there are conditions for GMs - such as was the case with the circuit Sean Hewitt used to organise).

Having said that, an event like the Kings Place rapid is fantastic for London based players, and, in the same vein, I happily play without conditions in tournaments on my doorstep - even, for example, paying an entry fee to participate in the Paignton congress!

Today's game J Rudd- M.Nicolov is shown as a win for white but the final position appears to be a draw by repartition to me.

It was a draw by repetition.
