Hawkins is not as aggressive as Black. Borderline but i'd back McPhillips to draw, on balance. Danny is also playing well and even with Black is not certain to lose to Gawain.
The real interest so far has been caused by the younger 2250-2400 players: Merriman beating Williams and Jackson beating Pert, both with Black yesterday, and McPhillips comfortably holding Luke with Black: and Claridge-Hansen beating Yang-Fan on Sunday. The 2250-2400 range is usually conspicuous by its absence at the British, and perhaps it is only a bit better this year; but still it has had quite an impact.

How much did you pay calling John Merriman a younger one, he is only a couple of years younger than yourself (and older than Simon); will have to start calling yourself a younger oneJonathan Rogers wrote:Hawkins is not as aggressive as Black. ah well, I know he is playing again now, and evidently quite a lot and very successfully; but I don't think I've actually seen him in person since 1997!

McPhillips-Hawkins drawn. Adair dropped a pawn which may mess up a few predictions.

What odds some of the rating prizes get won by people actually losing rating points...?

Re: British predictions for FUN people
Ok so after 4 rounds I have 4x3 1x2.5.
Koby on 2.5 my punt on a junior though thought that is U18. And Will Taylor winning on Monday.
Very early days yet and all to play for. As for fun - I was in hospital for most of Sunday - a problem getting cab there and back because of a bike ride.
Was very drowsy with the pain killers so slept 24 out of 36 hours Sunday and Monday.
Shame I forgot about John Merriman - who I met at Hampstead and he then went very well at Kings Place. I was very out of it making my fun choices.
Been at work today so looking forward to playing through games and commentary after I eat.

Re: British predictions for FUN people
Any predictions for the top five boards for round 7?
1. Gormally Daniel 5-5½ Mcshane Luke
2. Hawkins Jonathan 5-5 Emms John
3. Howell David 4½-4½ Eggleston David
4. Houska Jovanka 4½-4½ Jones Gawain
5. Pert Nicholas 4½- 4½ Wells Peter
One possible scenario is that David Howell wins three straight games, having played his nearest rivals in terms of rating, and that McShane and Jones meet at some point and draw. I think Luke will win today, though. I also predict Howell will win, and Hawkins and Jones and Wells. No draws!!

Seemingly the winning entry, unless Hawkins or Hebden wins (which would help others) but neither seems likely to happen.Andy Stoker wrote:Gormally, McPhillips, Adair, Emma, Ghasi
I am not surprised that such a low score has sufficed! Everyone backed at least one of Hawkins, Pert and Adair and this has cost everyone, to some lesser or (in some cases) a much greater extent.
I don't think anyone predicted Hanley!
