I was rather thinking this might attract more players from the Staffs, Shropshire, Merseyside and Manchester/Stockport league regions.
I know it already has an extended interest beyond these boundaries.

It seems likely that it's clashing with some other local event because the hotel was fully booked on the Saturday night at least 2 months ago. I would probably have played if I'd been able to get a room.

The Congress had a special deal on offer, so it's at least possible that rooms were withdrawn from the usual booking sites. That said, they only had Friday when speaking directly to the hotel a couple of weeks ago.

There are plenty of hotels and B&Bs in the area around Crewe.

But if you can't stay at the hotel where it's being played, with the convenience of being able to go back to your room between games, the event loses it's attractiveness.

The Open was using duplicate scoresheets.

Are the games likely to be published? The chess-results server could be used, given its capacity to store pgns.

Here's my first ever win against Mike Surtees. For once I wasn't confused by his opening and managed to mostly avoid miscalculations.

Nice one Rog... He eschewed 6... d6, and went for a side line.

Normally in the KIA W plays for a K-side attack and B for a Q-side.

He missed it with 9... Be7?!, wasting time, instead 9... b4... gets on with it - as in Uriwa-Schupp 1996 U-17 Hessen Ch. 1996 0-1 [41]

The critical position, it seems, is after 27.Rb5 Bd8?? which is a failure to rise to the occasion - 27... a6! would have put the question to both players.

I certainly missed 27. .. a6 until an engine found it for me after the game. It goes on to suggest that I take the Knight on a5 and then give up the trapped Rook for a pawn and initiative. Equality apparently with a near forced repetition to follow.

If he was hoping to confuse me in the opening, it didn't work, as I've met the 1. .. e6, 2. .. b5 idea before. I've used the transposition into a mainstream KIA before, only this time I was able to exploit the absence of either Nd2 or Qe2 to get Bf4 in, thereby provoking .. g5. The weak pawns on g6 and b5 enable me to bolster the centre with d4 because of the threat of Qd3.
