Dear County Chess President / County officials & members,

My name is Charles Storey I have a degree in Computing Science, Fide Master and current u16 England Coach, I am also official Chess Coach for the upcoming ‘London Chess Classic’ organised by our chosen merchandise chess supplier ‘Chess & Bridge.’ - Where this Junior Training Syllabus will be promoted.

I am going to help you create a massive chess popularity explosion in your County and help your County Chess Organisation generate £6k per year, every year, all I ask is that you discuss this at your next meeting as an agenda item – it would help if you could forward this to the other members / officials in your County so they are briefed before the meeting. This really could be the start of something very special for U.K. Chess.

Over the past 5 years I have been developing ‘The National Chess Syllabus’ featuring ‘The Bandana Exam System.’ (TNCSFTBES) into North East Schools You can view more about it at www.CharlieChess.com but in short it delivers a rolling 6 week teaching programme to children in schools and at weekends followed by a Bandana Test, it has been delivered and still is delivering, in many schools in North East England it is refined and polished that creates a fantastic learning environment for children who will be enthused by chess..

THE NATIONAL CHESS SYLLABUS FEATURING THE BANDANA EXAM SYSTEM has been researched and developed specifically with one aim:

THE NATIONAL CHESS SYLLABUS FEATURING THE BANDANA EXAM SYSTEM Aim: To encourage children to take up, enjoy and continue to enjoy playing & learning about chess. It achieves these goals by using:

Tapping in to current chess teaching programmes & activities and enhancing them considerably with;

Colour, Fun, Advancing Bandana rewards, Web support, Chess Community School Leagues, National Promotions and extensive research into its delivery to youngsters.

I have a passion for delivering Chess activities and I would like every child in the U.K. to have regular chess playing and quality instruction (This may also help ‘Broken Britain’ just as Chess helped me become educated after living in a ‘Broken Britain area ’ for most of my Youth.) We can achieve this together and I can also help bring some more excellent advantages to your County Association which are;

1. A Structured Training Syllabus for new players and youngsters that will maintain their lifelong interest and help earn them a colourful new Bandana every 6 weeks, A course delivered by your newly created position in your County Structure a THE NATIONAL CHESS SYLLABUS FEATURING THE BANDANA EXAM SYSTEM Teacher and Tests are marked by us independent of The E.C.F. so your County keeps all profits that are generated.

2. A Chess Training Syllabus that has a 115 simple to deliver, 1 hour lessons, in 8 Different Belts rising from light to dark --- White, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple, Brown, Black using a Physical Book and a purposely designed ‘e’ book for use with school smart boards or with a standard Internet Browser or Laptop.

3. A Support website where Bandana Tests can be taken by students and then issued by us, so no admin on your part – Students are then added to ‘The Hall of Fame’ and state of the art database processing enables you to quickly see what rank they are on and from each different County – We pay for all of this.

4. £6000 extra per year – every Year for your County Chess Association! More if you want it.

5. A THE NATIONAL CHESS SYLLABUS FEATURING THE BANDANA EXAM SYSTEM Teacher is created by your County as an official post that gives to your organisation a 10% Support fee (£30 - £60 per week every week) this also promotes teaching in local schools and oversees a Schools Chess League. We liaise with that person support and train them with proven results – We get into Schools where others may fail we have the staff, experience and knowledge to deliver.

6. Full Support is given to your newly created County THE NATIONAL CHESS SYLLABUS FEATURING THE BANDANA EXAM SYSTEM Teacher by us, delivered through (www.CharlieChess.com) with a FAQ list, support videos and a contact number for direct advice from me call mobile 07719070349.

7. I provide the Bandanas, Website, Database processing Bandana Tests, and certificate so no admin for you.

8. You can have Junior events whereby children wear their ‘Judo Style Bandanas’ creating a lovely picture for promotion and publicity purposes that bring in more children to play chess. The local Press love this idea expects a steady stream of positive publicity. PROVEN!

9. A simple agreement is reached between your County and me to enable its implementation; I require simply £100 per year and a 5 year agreement – A small price if you are generating £6k every year – that’s 30k and only £500. My fees go to creating the state of Art website, maintenance, National Promotions & a TV Chess channel! Let’s make it happen! Added to the contract you have the option, it’s not compulsory, to purchase 100 of the 240 page THE NATIONAL CHESS SYLLABUS FEATURING THE BANDANA EXAM SYSTEM Books, then sell them for 100% mark-up that is buying at £10 and selling at £20 – its available at Amazon and WHSmiths for £25. Your County Organisation may sell them or your newly appointed NATIONAL CHESS SYLLABUS FEATURING THE BANDANA EXAM SYSTEM official. THE NATIONAL CHESS SYLLABUS FEATURING THE BANDANA EXAM SYSTEM has already been proven to work in Northumberland, Tyne & Wear and next up is Yorkshire. All other County Presidents are being sent this today and it is hoped we can unify the delivery of The Syllabus as soon as possible – I suggest raising this at an extraordinary general meeting or your next meeting, or distribute this to your members. This way of chess delivery will help break away from the current rating system that is based around a number that is not well designed for children’s initial entry in to chess and use a modern up to date approach with structured training – not based on a win at all costs solution. After the kids have had a good positive exposure to this Syllabus they then enter, at a later date, into the ECF number system which is good, but has no value for children who initially start, whereby a Bandana Reward System, gained over every 6 weeks does and also helps focus their interest. The massive amount of children who have then had their interest stimulated will then , after perhaps 1-2 years, be ready to make a jump to the adult based and designed - ECF adult rating System

10. Using this Bandana System you gain a considerable amount of income approximately £6k. per year which can then be used for other chess promotions / events that make chess more attractive for juniors in the short and long term – e.g. Grandmaster events with large prize –money so that children can aspire to be chess professionals rather than look up and see no reason to aspire. The income is generated for you in two ways:

One THE NATIONAL CHESS SYLLABUS FEATURING THE BANDANA EXAM SYSTEM Teacher you create ,whom we support and train will contribute 10% of all chess income he earns (typically £25 per Hour, 10 hours = £25 each week for your County.

Two You may purchase ‘The National chess Syllabus books ‘ from me at a rate of £10 per book – These are then sold by your County and your New THE NATIONAL CHESS SYLLABUS FEATURING THE BANDANA EXAM SYSTEM Teacher at a rate of £20 to each student – (It is £25 if purchased at Amazon or WHSmiths) Children pay £2 per week or schools simply purchase them outright in bulk. There is one important fact here; if you wish to purchase books from me at the £10 rate you must order them in batches of at least 100 – total £1000 when you sell them all you will have made a £1000 profit – may I suggest you use that to purchase your next batch – put £1000 of your own profit in the Bank and so on.

11. Using this brilliant marketing idea of a ‘Simple Colourful Judo Style Bandana’ it helps promote chess dramatically and can help us compete for and sustain interest in this incredible activity we know that is so beneficial for education.

12. Any profits generated by me will go to the development towards a weekly Chess TV show on a mainstream TV Channel that you will be able to enjoy.

13. A support Regional Academy will be set –up 6 In total across the U.K. where chess can become a Centre of excellence for Juniors and adults.

14. A appreciate some people may not want the change or there may be some poitical block from some officials but let us see the importance of becoming a competitive activity against other sports, Xbox and mindless computer games.

That was quite a lot to digest so I will break it down into 7 simple points so it’s easy to remember - and without the sales pitch.

1. Your County is paying £100 per year for a proven National Chess Syllabus a contract will be signed for 5 years – you may cancel or renew then.

2. Your County earn approx 6k. per year and create a job for a THE NATIONAL CHESS SYLLABUS FEATURING THE BANDANA EXAM SYSTEM County Chess Teacher / Promoter – We give them advice and support too this can be Part Time or Full Time.

3. Your vision as President in developing this Training Programme within your County will create a chess interest boom helping restore ‘ Broken Britain’ giving kids a great activity. It has great Philanthropic attachment.

4. THE NATIONAL CHESS SYLLABUS FEATURING THE BANDANA EXAM SYSTEM ‘e’ book designed for delivering to student groups using the school technology or Internet will be given to your newly created THE NATIONAL CHESS SYLLABUS FEATURING THE BANDANA EXAM SYSTEM County Chess Teacher who will become my main point of contact with your organisation – This can be a current teacher or a new one, as new contracts will be made with new schools – so ‘not stepping on anyone’s toes’ The Contracts within the schools become yours not mine!

5. You may purchase 100 books from me at £10 and sell them for £20 this is £5 cheaper than its Amazon or WHSmith price.

6. Helping me work towards the creation of a Chess TV Channel we can all enjoy.

7. Please forward this to your other County officials and raise it as a point on your next meeting agenda where you will also consider appointing a THE NATIONAL CHESS SYLLABUS FEATURING THE BANDANA EXAM SYSTEM County Chess Teacher.

I would also like to offer 1 final service -

I would like to come to your County and do a ‘Simultaneous Display Challenge’ to all interested members of Your County, in short it gives me a nice platform to advertise the book and I also offer my £100 fee, which your County pays , to the first player to defeat me – I can play 25 players in a 2 hour Clock Simultaneous and I will require 1 return ticket from Newcastle costing about £20-£90(or fuel) depending upon your location this can be done any day of the week - possibly a night time although further expense of £50 for a hotel room is required for night time club Simultaneous Display Challenge’ (2 or 3 clubs together) all must be paid in advance. To Book a mutual date call me on mobile 07719070349 or email me at [email protected]

I Thank You for reading this and I hope to meet you in the flesh very soon or at the upcoming London Chess Classic 8th – 15th December Olympia, London - where I am the appointed CRB Checked Professional Chess Instructor in the morning and playing in the event in the afternoon – a busy day!

Yours in Chess,

Presumably this is an alternative (rival?) to the CoM scheme?

Anyone on this forum tried any of the exams?

I've noticed the following post on the Facebook entry of Charlie Storey :
I will post every day about this major injustice - The Certifiicate of Merit should be renamed The Certificate of ripping off The National Chess Syllabus and Bandana Exam System www.WCOengland.com/tncs See morebecause
that's exactly what it did, and I am very surprised at a Coach of your
expertise has been involved in t...his blatant plagiarism - My legal case will come in due course and those that ripped me off will be held accountable.
I wonder if I'm included in the
those that ripped me off
list?

John,

I would ask Charlie on your behalf but I'm afraid that he failed to turn up this morning for the Durham County Chess Congress

He was talking about his perceived injustice yesterday but your name was not mentioned. Hopefully that will allow you to sleep a bit easier tonight. :D

Hmm! Interesting!

There seem to be at least four people who have, at some point, been led to believe that they were supposed to be writing/running a national chess course/certificate of merit/certificate of excellence scheme for the BCF/ECF.

I see that on Facebook Charlie is claiming the ECF ripped off his idea for CoM.
I assumed that the CoM idea was based on the proven BCF Certificate of Excellence which had been running for many years.
ps Has anyone else been getting emails about Institute of Chess www.instituteofchess.co.uk ?

This appears to be Chris Ward.

This is an offshoot of CoE run by Peter Bayliss.

If only all the parties could work together in a cohesive way we might be able to get somewhere.

There is an analogy between all of this and having three antique shops in different towns : which one to visit?

If they were next to each other as they are in Hartley Wintney then you could visit all three and they would all benefit.

Very frustrating...

I did talk several times to Peter about putting his scheme on-line some years ago.

Anyway, hopefully the market is big enough for all of these offerings.

"These courses are suitable for players up to County Open level, junior or adult" on this Bayliss test stuff.

theres some stuff in the level 5 thing I don't agree with and the above comment is bit well "much".

Like in the Ne5 stuff, i dont know if its sound but I play Nc3 wich isnt mentioned, then 90% of IM's+ on icc when i play there play e6 stuff Qd4 Ng6 Bxc4 , if e5 what the thing suggests, then youve gained a tempo from that line, exd5 you can play an array of stuff here.

O well....

Peter Bayliss, Chris Ward and the Kent Junior Chess Association (KJCA) produced some notes to accompany the Certificate of Excellence and produced some exams beyond the scope of CoE. Of course anybody else was perfectly at libery to do likewise. Myself and Peter Turner produced notes to accompany the Bronze and Silver levels, which were free to both the ECF and anyone taking the CoE.
Kent's Platinum paper is very difficult and it always seemed unlikely that many people would sit it. It appears that they have realised the same thing and now have introduced beginners papers in competition to the ECF's own offering. I don't have a particular problem with this.
I am slightly perplexed my Charlie Storey's comments. The Bandana system seems to be much more a teaching style. It will resonate with certain teachers and certain pupils, but it will put others off. I see it as quite distinct from the CoE, CoM, or the Kent offering, and not in direct competition.
I think all this shows that there are quite a lot of things out there. Have I mentioned chesskids.com recently. It will be very difficult for the CoM to recoup the initial investment.

I am assuming that the Bandana System was developed by Charles?

Same question for the National Chess Syllabus (I'm assuming that they both were).
