Amy Hoare lost in 60 moves after a hard fight, Franklin and Zhou drew though at one point Franklin had a winning ending.

Chess Results is now showing most of the England round 2 results and it looks as if Joshua Altman in the U8s will be our only 2/2. There are 15 other U8s on this score. The overall England result, if I've calculated right, was 50 per cent in round 1 and will be below that in round 2.

One can say that it's early days and that there are still seven rounds left, but as far as medal contenders go that's not completely true. These are large fields with, especially in the younger age groups, fairly random early pairings. The critical point for this event, as I remember well when I was helping Gawain Jones and David Howell when they played 10-15 years ago, is that the primary tie-breaker is sum of progressive scores, which means that if you drop points early on it will probably equate to being half a point behind your rivals at the business end of the tournament.

So basically for those of our players who could be medal or top ten contenders and dropped points today, a good round 3-4 result is very important.

Everyone settled in for Round 3 - temperatures soaring outside the playing halls; luckily air conditioned (a little) inside. Best of luck to all the children.

FM Godart FRA v Yang-Fan Zhou available on the live games, looks like Y-F has outbooked his opponent in the Tromp.

I do wonder why certain people get picked year on year - is there an element of paying for a place! Maybe not a problem if there is.

There is a selection process in place, but if you are best in your age group, you can hold that slot for several years, thereby getting repeated invitations. The finance comes from the John Robinson Trust and the player's family.

One of the changes introduced by the election of Phil Ehr last year, was the notion that you can and should send multiple players in the same age group.

Thank you Roger - but does it matter if you are not very good. Actually you have answered that as well.

Finance for each player from the John Robinson trust? When Peter played in the Europeans we as his parents paid the full amount both times which was over £1300 and no mention was ever made of funds for players or parents as far as i know! Roger is correct about sending multiple players for each year group a change introduced by the election of Phil Ehr but had been sought for many years by many people but resisted by Peter Purland.

I lose track of how the JRT money is employed. I had the idea that it paid in part for coaching, but I might be mistaken.

They certainly contributed towards the cost of a coach for Yang-Fan at the World Junior. Yang-Fan chose Mark Hebden and he was also utilised to coach both Callum & Ravi. The JRT help, combined with me coaching without a fee meant I was able to offer a less expensive package than is often the case at junior events which meant that some players who would not otherwise have been able to afford it got an opportunity to go and hopefully benefitted from the experience.

A very good way to use any finance giving by the trust towards coaching and you be willing to coach with out a fee thus helping to reduce the amount a trip may cost so allowing more juniors to go who may not have been able to afford it.
Yang Fan game looks interesting!
