Noticed something interesting/unusual. In the U12 Open, four out of the top six are all American (we are in round 8 now). Are the Americans doing something special now regards their junior chess? Does anyone know? Hillary, could you ask them for us?
They seemed to have upped the ante in the younger age groups.

Re: World Youth 2012 - Maribor, Slovenia
New York has a number of chess clubs which welcome Junior players giving them a lot of support and chances to play strong adults I know one club holds regular FIDE events for juniors to play in.Manhattan chess club is very strong as is the new Jersey club and Brooklyn.I would guess because many of the USA juniors can play more and against strong junior/ adult chess players this must help develop them to a higher standard than most other juniors. A number of the clubs have regular session with chess mastesr giving lectures or playing in events against club members or giving simultaneous as well as coaching. If you live in or near New York you would be able to play a great deal of chess with out to much traveling or having to stay in hotels. You have also got central park where you can play outside against strong players in blitz games and then go on to the chess club after you warmed up against some of them! Peter grand dad won a watch in central park against a USA player.Krishna Shiatis wrote:Noticed something interesting/unusual. Peter,
When did you guys go? That sounds awesome! We need somewhere like the Central Park set up here - but with the weather, I guess it has to be indoors like in a coffee shop or something?

One of our number talked to someone in the US delegation out here as we had the same observation...sounds as though they have done something similar to us in relation to making their selection policy more open/wider, hence they too are sending more kids vs. previous. One part of the story, no doubt.Krishna Shiatis wrote:Noticed something interesting/unusual. In the U12 Open, four out of the top six are all American (we are in round 8 now). If the live reults are correct (sometimes they aren't) great win for Yang-Fan as black against the 2537 rated number 3 seed.

Thanks Jim, sounds like we are heading in the right direction then as well. Wondered also if maybe the Polgars are involved with the chess training of the National squad?Jim Wadsworth wrote:One of our number talked to someone in the US delegation out here as we had the same observation...sounds as though they have done something similar to us in relation to making their selection policy more open/wider, hence they too are sending more kids vs. previous. I have heard that a lot of GMs/IMs are heading stateside to teach chess as it is becoming big over there.
Congrats to all the team on the super results coming out so far!
