Nothing of the sort could ever happen here, of course.
Oh, wait a minute.

A couple of games already finished. Either no-shows or zero time default accidents.

59 boards in the male section and up to about 45 live.
Samuel on bd. 50 (not live) and Rob on 36 (live), today.
Looks like Rob (black) has had to give up, as one does, just after move 40 due to being n+p for R.
Good try, though, against a 2417 Ukranian.
It seems like 3 defaults - a Bolivian (2168), Mexican (1992) & French FM (2427)!?
Edit: Only one default in the 30 bd. female section - French (1920).

I know it's not the done thing these days and my opinion may be in the minority, but bearing in mind that this is the World Junior, not an online bullet game, Rob resigned about 15 moves too late.

Playing in any World Chess Championship is a fantastic experience, you can't blame a guy for hoping and trying to the bitter end.
As Bill Shankly said, "Even the bad times were good."

Samuel a very strong chess player who will do very well at this event.I remember Samuel coming 2nd at the Guernsey chess International and it was lovely to see the joy on his parents face at the airport over this result
Samuel not played heaps of events as i believe he was concentrating on his A levels. He also a really nice lad very polite a credit to his parents.

I'm with you. (It is a World event though and not a European one, so it should be easier for him to pick up points at the bottom)

I think resignation is purely an individual decision. I would be more concerned if he was resigning too early.

As already noted, I lost after struggling for the vast majority of the game (though at move 25 I didn't consider my position lost, so it wouldn't have been correct for me to resign there). Sam won, though his opponent put up far more of a fight than would have been expected from his rating. Sam will be on the live boards tomorrow, where as I almost certainly won't be.

Wrong, it would appear. You've actually gone up a board.

Well, so much for my expectation of white against a much lower rated opponent. Either way, this should be an interesting game, and gives Mark twice as much work to do whilst we're playing.

Ah but you need to look at the nationality of the opponent as well, in an event like this. When I saw that, I immediately thought "Ok, but this guy could easily be 400-500 points stronger than his rating". Given that, and the last minute decision to play, I expect Samuel was just happy with the full point!
Good luck to you both today.

I'd like to echo Jonathan Rogers and wish Samuel and Robert the best of luck today.
Robert did not get the luck of the draw for round 2 but things like that can happen - I was given black in rounds 1 & 2 and a (slightly) higher-rated opponent in the Seniors section at Torquay in August. (An imbalance in the number of white/black wins in the first round was probably to blame.)
RdC (on round 1) >A couple of games already finished. Either no-shows or zero time default accidents.<
Me >It seems like 3 defaults - a Bolivian (2168), Mexican (1992) & French FM (2427)!? Edit: Only one default in the 30 bd. female section - French (1920).<
The two missing French players are in the pairings for round 2. The Bolivian and Mexican are still missing so the number of boards in the male section is reduced by one to 58.
