Juniors abroad

Post by LawrenceCooper » Mon Oct 21, 2013 10:39 am

Both Alan Merry and Ravi Haria are competing in the WinterChess IM Octubre 2013 event in Majorca. It's a ten player, nine round all-play-all with an IM norm opportunity.

Round 3 seems to take place before round 2 and there might be some late nighters, but this looks like a good opportunity for the Alan and Ravi

What score will be needed for an IM norm?

I believe 6.5 for the two English players and others below 2300 but probably 7 for the two FMs rated 2360+.

A Round 1 win (with Black) for Alan Merry against the second seed rated 2416. Ravi Haria lost to the top seed (2428). Ravi and Alan play each other in Round 2 at 10.00 today.

Ravi and Alan had a hard fought draw against each other in round 2 which was one of the last games to finish. Round 3 takes place later tonight, unfortunately for Ravi it clashes with the Arsenal Champions League game

Alan drew but Ravi lost in round 3 so they are on 2/3 and 0.5 respectively. Back to one game a day for round 4 and 5 before reverting to a double round day followed by a single round day and then an early start for round 9.

Not that I know of, I've been relying on e-mails from Ravi's mum Sonal for updates apart from the basic results which are on chess-results.

Another draw for Alan and a win for Ravi leaving them on 5 and 3/7. Nice to see they are both gaining rating points: http://www.chess-results.com/tnr114210. ... t=1&wi=821 I don't want to tempt fate and mention the n... word but fingers crossed for Alan in the last two rounds and hopefully Ravi can continue his excellent fightback.

I may be wrong, but by my reckoning Alan Merry, already on 6 points, has attained an IM norm (even if he loses the final round this morning). Average rating of his opponents is 2293 and I believe 66% is +125.
