Good to see a representative in this prestigious event, being held in a faraway place this year -

R2 Bd. 51 S no. 110 Horton Jamie A 2064 ENG (0) - (0) Rindlisbacher Jan 2217 SUI S no. 71

(There are 137 competitors in the Open section.)

There's an extraordinary number of Indian players. Yes, it is the host country, but it still seems quite a lot to me. Are the rest of the countries restricted to nominate one player each?

There's an unrestricted number these days, but the top nominee gets free or reduced price entry and accommodation. It was an issue in English Junior chess for a while as to who should get the financial benefit when multiple players are sent. I think the eventual resolution was that you established the net cost taking into account any free places and spread this over all the participants.

In some events, the number of host nation's players gets excessive, so that particularly in the second half of the pairings, it's not as if English players are playing in a proper international event, rather they are playing as a guest in a foreign national championship.

Most big international tournaments are like that; turn up to a large international Swiss in England and you'll usually find that most of the bottom half of the draw are ENG.

So, a safe bet by Martin Crichton on Jamie Horton's victory in round 3.

A 1st round game that featured Jamie Horton's 2nd round Swiss opponent is given in -

http://en.chessbase.com/post/world-juni ... sonalities

In the 1st round a number of 2100-ish Indians managed to draw with White against much higher-rated opposition and two actually managed wins -

Bd. 19 19 IM Karthikeyan Murali 2499 IND 0 - 1 Siva Mahadevan 2141 IND 88

"The ten-year-old Nihal Sarin (2076) turned out to be the hero of the day as he beat
IM Jonathon Westerberg (2420) of Sweden." (Chessbase link above)

"Lesser fancied Indians continued to impress, while the fancied ones struggled to score even as overseas Grandmasters took charge in the third round of the World Junior Chess Championships being played at Hotel Hyatt." (Official site)

R4 51 Horton Jamie A 2064 ENG 1 - 1 Abhishek A 2138 IND

Danger, Jamie Horton, danger...
