Even so, this is the best we've got, pretty much. And not bad.

But it's way short of the best. And short even of Austria. How do they do it? How don't we?
I remember years ago reading Leonard Barden (I believe) writing about the prodigious Nigel Short being a rare exception as prodigies usually come from Jewish (and i think he added other ethnicities) descent.
Is there good evidence that white Caucasians are less prodigious than other ethnic groups as children?

It's worth bearing in mind that this is really an England Under 16 rather than Under 18 team with the exception of Andrew. Had the U16 Olympiad been held elsewhere they may have targeted that event. I think it will be great experience for the players though and Matthew and Ravi in particular have been part of the England junior set up for many years and as well as being very strong players are also excellent role models for our younger players, as are Andrew and William.

Part of the old USSR, of course - you have much of your answer there.

Let's hope so. But I worry.

The team is seeded last (of 14); the guys are heavily out-rated at the top; and that means some heavy punishment for Andrew and Ravi. That can be character-forming for some; but soul-destroying for others. And they're still young, with yet limited resources for coping. We do owe them a duty of care, a duty that strikes the right balance between exposure to life's harsh realities, and protection from unnecessary pain. I guess we're giving some thought to this. We better be, otherwise we could end up with demoralised youngsters. Not that William will be demoralised tonight, having pulled off an almighty escape

I'm sure these things are all considered when deciding if to send a player or team, when I was involved I certainly took it very seriously eg when Ravi Haria was part of the delegation sent to the World Under 20 when he was 13. It was a tough event but he finished with three wins and suffered no ill-effects.

Today's match finished 1.5-2.5 with Ravi's game ending as a draw.

I'm pleased to report that England won 2.5-1.5 today with wins for Andy and William, a draw for Ravi and sadly a loss for Matthew.
