Surrey Junior Chess Association?

Post by John Upham » Mon Jun 20, 2016 10:28 am

Kent, Sussex and Berkshire are highly successful (in my opinion) for their provision of SE junior events via their County Junior Chess Associations.

I was hoping to find a similar organisation as an adjunct to the Surrey County Chess Association but am struggling to do so.

I cannot find a coordinated list of junior events for the Surrey area.

There appear to be non-County based events such as those run by Wey Valley, CCF and David Archer.

Can anyone please help as I have a bunch of keen primary school children / students itching to play chess on Saturdays / Sundays.

Thanks!

The Surrey County Chess Association website section for Junior Chess has 4 sub-headings (Junior Clubs, County Teams, Library Chess, Schools Chess) of which Library Chess is only one with content (last updated by Richard Tillett on 4 June 2016). The other pages are under construction but with no dates as to when content will be added.

1. Wey Valley[6] is affiliated to EPSCA[2] and compete in its U9, U11 and U11 Girls competitions.
2. Several Surrey schools compete in the ECF Secondary School Rapidplay Chess Tournament[3] and the Briant Poulter Chess League[4]
3. Last competed in ECF (u18/u13) County Team Jamborees in 2014[13*].
3a*. Surrey compete in the SCCU U14/130 matches[10*] and SCCU (u18/u14) Jamboree[11*].
4. Coulsden[7] appear have a chess Calendar of Surrey Junior Events[5] which one might mistake as having been posted by the Surrey Junior Chess Association. It does not include any events organised by Wey Valley.
5. A further option is Guildford Chess Academy[8].
6. Finally, I've come across a good summary on the organisation of Junior Chess in Surrey posted on UK Chess Challenge[9].
7*. Richmond Junior Chess Club[12*]

Evidently there is much Junior Chess activity in the county.

In your first instance put your query to Neill. As list on SCCA site

SCCA AGM is on 26/06 & this list may change. The junior managers are excellent letting us know availability for County Chess etc.
Nice to see Brian poulter league as strong as ever - that's where I first got my experience.

Also looking at SCCU site plenty of Surrey Junior Chess. This season.
Surrey hosting a number too.
Plenty of other successes in congresses & representative teams.

There's also Richmond Junior Club, although it currently meets in Middlesex. Your players would also be very welcome to attend our Rapidplays, Holiday Chess Camps etc..

This is all very helpful. What I am really after is tournaments suitable for school chess club players who have yet to obtain a grade / rating.

John, I have received favourable feedback from the less experienced Watford juniors about the Maidenhead rapidplay tournaments on Saturday mornings. Next one is on 9 July with two sections, under-110 (ECF graded) and beginners (ungraded), where almost all the Watford juniors are encouraged to enter the under-110 section. It's nothing too elaborate but serves the purpose of giving newer juniors experience and the opportunity to obtain rapidplay grades.

If you look on the Wey Valley site there is a fixtures tab with tournaments listed, which are not just Wey Valley tournaments - they will not include Coulsdon tournaments- to say the two organisations do not get on would be an understatement :(. The tournaments operated by Coulsdon will be listed on their website. The Mike Basman make me a champion tournaments (normally on the Wey Valley website - although there is a separate website also ) are suitable for players just starting out, as too are the Wey Valley & Coulsdon tournaments.
