Re: Junior events at the British Chess Championship 2016
Shreyas Royal has this evening won the British U8 title with 6/6, beating the top seeded George Clarkson in the final round. Shreyas also won the silver medal at last month's European schools under-7.
I am following this youngster's early career with interest to see how rapidly he advances. The more critical tests in the next few days will be how, as an under-7, he performs in the under-9 and under-10.
Meanwhile, look at this video:

Having played Shreyas Royal a couple of times recently, I'm pretty sure that neither of these two videos are of him.

The fact that he starts the first one by saying he is 10 years old is probably a bit of a giveaway...Nigel White wrote:Having played Shreyas Royal a couple of times recently, I'm pretty sure that neither of these two videos are of him.

I thought he looked a bit older than an under-8...Richard Bates wrote:The fact that he starts the first one by saying he is 10 years old is probably a bit of a giveaway...Nigel White wrote:Having played Shreyas Royal a couple of times recently, I'm pretty sure that neither of these two videos are of him.

With two of the top four seeds, Watford had high hopes for the under-9 championship. However, it wasn't to be and we congratulate James Merriman. (The event wasn't a total disaster for Watford where a couple of less highly-rated juniors over-performed so its six representatives collectively notched up 22.5 points out of a possible 36).

I didn't see any prior announcement. It must have been a last minute decision.Nick Grey wrote:Nice to wake up to see the U10s on live boards & see lively chess at 9.45 in the morning.
Two players finished on 5/6, but do they share the title or is there a tiebreak?
It is disappointing that the Championship website doesn't have (or at least I can't find) a summary of the British Championship titles winners as they are decided.

My mistake. I, of course, meant two players finished on 6/7.LawrenceCooper wrote:They are seven round events that finished today.
Same question: Do they share the title or is there a tiebreak?

I think shared although I haven't dug out the rules and regs to check.Michael Flatt wrote:My mistake. I, of course, meant two players finished on 6/7.LawrenceCooper wrote:They are seven round events that finished today.

I think they share. The Tournament Rules on the website only seem to to refer to the Main Event.LawrenceCooper wrote:I think shared although I haven't dug out the rules and regs to check.
There is a list of 2016 Prize Winners, but it is not fully up to date:
