Just as a matter of interest, what is the grounds for this having a British Championship qualifying place? There was some debate not so long ago about the grounds for a tournament like Kidlington (U220) having a qualifying place - the justification being that although not an Open, anyone graded over 220 would qualify by right anyway. But U2200/190? How low can a rating restricted tournament go?

Or is this tournament being used to produce the nominee for the Director of Home Chess?

Doesn't that only work if he is re-elected in October AFTER the event.

I too would like to know how this is a BCQ.

I suggest you ask Lara, since it was she who granted it! It may have been an error - and it's not a problem if it doesn't merit a BCQ. However I would not use my nomination for an event I was involved in, as that wouldn't be appropriate.

But shouldn't you as the person who proposed most of the changes and as the Director in charge have actually known what the rules were? Why should I ask Lara when I'm asking you?

As a US President once said "The buck stops here". You can hardly complain about FIDE when you are adopting a similar cavalier attitude to rules.

Lara says "The regulations say any FIDE rated event, apply to the manager ...etc. I feel that new events should be given a place this year for next and then we need to have a good look at all the regulations, but, as with Bournemouth, I think we should accept applications from all sensible requests for the 100th..." and I am happy to accept Lara's decision. Thanks Lara!

Well it just seems to make a mockery of having qualification regulations to me, but there we are. The comparison with Bournemouth doesn't make much sense - that was a non-FIDE rated Open and therefore not an automatic qualifier because it didn't attract of the Union nominee places (and as a new event not eligible for one of the "largest congress" spots etc). However, as an Open, it still met the basic criteria for potential qualifier.

This tournament evidently does not - the regulations specify that an "Open" is defined as grading/rating unrestricted or minimum 218/2350 and below. Once you disregard this where do you draw the line for "sensible" applications? 2200 and below? 2000 and below? Could SeanH start offering BCQ places for his FIDE-rated Majors? (as long as it is at a 'new' venue, obviously! )

Not worth starting a new thread, but Adam mentioned the 100th Championships up above. Can anyone point me to dates and venue details if decided yet, or plans that have been made, as I'd like to start thinking now about planning to attend (seeing as I can't make this year's one).

EDIT: Found it: 27 July to 10 August; 100th British Chess Championships, Riviera Centre, Torquay.

Further details - the September 1st FIDE list, and (if they have no FIDE rating) the July 2012 ECF list or national ratings will be to determine eligibility. FIDE rating takes precedence.

CATERING
Norman and yElena Went will be providing the catering throughout the weekend, which should attract a few players ;-)

ARBITERS
Geoff Gammon (ECF Arbiter) has agreed to be the arbiter for the event.

FIDE RATING / ECF GRADERS
Alex Holowczak and Norman Went.

The September FIDE rating list is now out - so if you are Under 2200 consider playing five rated games at the Hampstead Congress, from the 22-23 September 2012, in the heart of London!
