Jon Burgess
I sadly just came across this. I used to see Jon at tournaments in the North-West when I first started playing. Sad News.

Re: Jon Burgess
I know it's been over 10 years, but still is very sad news. I remember playing Jon at the Chorley Chess Congress back in the early 90s. The other day, I was going through his win against GM Shulman from the Chicago Open back in 2004. It was a remarkable attacking display and it really made an impression on me.

Re: Jon Burgess
The game is indeed an excellent attacking game. There is some analysis by the winner here:

Good advice on playing stronger players.

The first game is from the 2004 Chicago Open. I played GM Yury Shulman who did become US Champion. The game was sharp and full of tactics. I played the board and not the player. If you respect the person you’re playing you will lose the game. I knew to win this game I didn’t have to simply win I had to destroy my opponents position and win his King.

Re: Jon Burgess
That is very sad news. I think I just missed him at Chorlton, but people there definitely remembered him when I arrived.

Re: Jon Burgess
According to his grading record, his last game for Chorlton was 11 March 2004, when he beat Jill Barber, so you must have only just missed him
I dimly remember playing Jon at Heaton Park in one of the Manchester Congresses, maybe in the Busy Persons

Re: Jon Burgess
This weekend's posts brought back some sad memories. I played Jon regularly in the 1990s, in tournaments and various Manchester league matches. I always remembered his unceasing cheerfulness, regardless of the results of our games. At the time, that made the reported cause of his death even sadder.
