Match of the Millenials
Very much enjoyed watching Match of the Millenials on YouTube yesterday. Basically a USA v Rest of the World Match for those born after 2000 which the Kasparov Foundation were very much behind and the great man was interviewed by Maurice Ashley during the first round. Four boards were being played in the U-17 and it was 2-1 to USA and everyone had assumed it was going to be 3-1 until it all went pear-shaped in the Burke-Chopra game https://chess24.com/en/watch/live-tourn ... -u17/1/1/3 . After the game Burke was walking around completed staggered. All the commentators could say (Ashley, Shahade, Ramirez) was that he would be benched for sure the next day. Thought that was very harsh, I'm sure they, like the rest of us, have all been there before so they didn't need to stick the boot in and in fact no praise was given to Chopra for an outstanding defensive performance.

Re: Match of the Millenials
After 4 rounds (3 for the U17 and 1 for the U14) of this 12 round event the World Team have a narrow 8.5-7.5 lead. Incredibly strong players, in the U14s we have discussed Praggnanandhaa, Abdusattorov and Assaubayeva on this forum and in the U17 we have a couple of 2600s for the USA team in Sevian and Xiong. Kasparov is aready saying that the USA is now a chesspowerhouse. More information in this ChessBase report and a very political Chess24 report.

GM Ian Rogers tweets "World team Match of the Millennials players still have not seen their share of the $20,000 winners' prize, with or without the 30% FIDE tax."

I suppose that assumes the deal was that the players got a share of the prize money and it isn't just pocketed by FIDE. One of the players was Australian IM Smirnov, which may explain Ian Rogers' interest.Chris Rice wrote:"World team Match of the Millennials players still have not seen their share of the $20,000 winners' prize, with or without the 30% FIDE tax."

Why would FIDE be levying charges other than a relatively small one for rating of the event?Roger de Coverly wrote:I suppose that assumes the deal was that the players got a share of the prize money and it isn't just pocketed by FIDE. On events such as the World Championship and Candidates, it's regular for FIDE to trouser part of the prize money.Angus French wrote: Why would FIDE be levying charges other than a relatively small one for rating of the event?
This was something of a special where a US team took on a FIDE organised team. What was the deal with payment of prizes to individual members of the FIDE/World team? According to Ian Rogers, it's currently effectively nil.

Ah, I gather it's the FIDE-organised World team which owes money to its players - and FIDE were going to take a cut of that.

Given that these are non-US citizens playing in the US, I'm a little surprised that the IRS didn't take some of the mpney at source.Angus French wrote:Ah, I gather it's the FIDE-organised World team which owes money to its players - and FIDE were going to take a cut of that.

Apparently the captain of the World team says they have yet to receive the prize money.

I don't know how many other people here have experience of making international payments out of the US banking system, but it is a ghastly business. Let's hope they don't find out that some of the money will end up with Russians.
Anyway, it seems a bit early to panic, and I have no doubt that St Louis will pay.

Ironic that Ben Finegold, late of the St Louis Scholastic Center and Chess Club, is complaining that he hasn't been paid after his recent victory in the ALOHA tournament.NickFaulks wrote:Anyway, it seems a bit early to panic, and I have no doubt that St Louis will pay.
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.
