Cheers Carl.

The real number of interest though of course is unique visitors. Do you know what that number is?

It's hard to determine that, what exact figure are you looking for?

The number of distinct hosts being the number of unique IP's is pretty close if not entirely accurate buy maybe as close as you can get?

I will check however

Distinct IP addresses sounds a reasonable way to do it. I use a stats provider to do it for me and i believe they do something with cookies.

My point is that 1/2 million successful requests (is that hits) sounds really impressive (if somewhat unbelievable) until you realise that the live games tfd file keeps refreshing every few seconds to keep up with moves played. Each time it does this is a hot, so this number is in fact fairly meaningless.

The number of unique visitors is much more interesting (although it will be much lower, probably several thousand) because it will tell us how many individuals are looking at the site. And persumably each of these is a chess player or a potential chess player.

The cookies method is even worse - what sort of figures do you get then?

The log file from Tuesday is over 237 megabytes so it's a lot of work to analyze in detail

Is it worth the effort and if so anyone got any free software they can recommend?

For some reason the forum wont let me insert the image URL to show you what I get. But I get Page Loads, Unique Visitors and Returning Visitors. For our county website its about 3 pages loads per visitor. But for the GibTelecom Chess Festival website its loads more than that - more like 50 page loads per visitor. I suspect the British Champs is more likely to have 50 page loads per visit than 3, but thats why visitors is a better measure of site activity.

I dont know if its worth the effort to get the stats (it might useful when talking to sponsors) but no-one is going to believe that the British Chess Championships is getting 3/4 million visitors per day! Having said that, at 50 pageloads per visit (which could be wide of the mark of course) that would be 15,000 visitors per day. A very healthy number.

Sean H's points are all well made.

Various people in the USA have looked into how many people worldwide watch live chess tournaments online and come up with the generality that it is about the number of people you get in a sports stadium. That's not quite as vague as it sounds. What they mean is that it peaks at around 60,000, for world-class events, and goes down to 5,000 to 20,000 for lesser ones.

My guess is that the British might attract something between 5,000 and 20,000 unique visitors, so Sean's extrapolation of 15,000 looks very feasible.
