Britweb chess club websites portal update

Post by Tryfon Gavriel » Mon Apr 25, 2011 4:36 pm

Hi all

I repaired quite a few links today and also added a Facebook comments wall to :

http://www.gtryfon.demon.co.uk/bcc/Uk_c ... ations.htm

I hope this is a more useful resource now than before

You can use the comments wall to suggest sites that are missing, etc.

Best wishes

Very nice. But what if you don't have a Facebook account? Am I the last person still not to have one?

I appreciate some people don't want to be on facebook for privacy and other reasons. But for helping promote chess clubs and for the social plugins to websites it provides, maybe it is good for chess clubs and organisations to become more socially connected. Some clubs dwindle and end up having to close through lack of members, so I think promotion is key- and if facebook is becoming an important promotional resource, then I think perhaps it is worth exploring it as an option.

The social plugins I used include the "Like" and the "Comments Wall" - but the directory of clubs is an ordinary web page - and you don't need to be on facebook to use the directory.

The website social plugins Facebook provides are shown here:

How do I go about getting Redditch Chess Club added to your list? We do have a facebook page but it is a bit short of activity. We would like to attract some more members. We have had a very good season generally with so far 2 teams promoted and another winning a trophy but we would like a few more players, so any publicity would be welcome.

Yes. No definition of Warwickshire has ever included that. :D

You might also update your list of Kent clubs - Hastings is in Sussex.

Hastings is indeed in (East) Sussex, but Hastings CC is also affiliated to Kent CCA.

Thanks for that Tryfon. Yes we are in Worcestershire but very close to the border with Warwickshire, about 3 miles away. In fact parts of Redditch were in Warwickshire at one time.

Here is a little task for you Tryfon : make your listing post code searchable on the location of the playing venue of the club.

For example, I would like to locate clubs meeting within 10 miles of my post code.

I'm sure you can sort that in an hour or two!

Maybe a much better version of http://www.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie= ... 1dbce44a16

would be handy?

That's a nice map, but why the different colour pins and one club represented by a car?

Good question and not a good answer. Two clubs play at the same post code : Camberley and Sandhurst so I had to differentiate somehow.

Hi John

Please feel free to use Britweb for your postcode project - I can link to your page from Britweb if you would like to maintain the post codes. The problem I see maybe is that clubs sometimes move or close. I am not sure if such details should really just be on the club's website.

I think the major update from my perspective of Britweb which has brought it more "alive" is the use of the two Facebook social plugins - perhaps more club websites can use these social plugins for leveraging social networks?!

That's much better than the map they use on the ECF website. Redditch and Headless Cross Chess clubs are close together and when you click on the ECF googlemap only Headless Cross comes up. When I queried this with the office they couldn't find a way to make us come up as well and said we would have to rely on people scrolling down the names at the side. The problem with that is that people won't necessarily realise that we are close to Headless Cross on the map and so won't look at us.
