Re: Scottish 2011
Did anyone notice what Dvoretsky would describe as a Tragecomedy ending to Bd4?
R+RP v's R ..... White needed to play Kf1 (not f3) and park the rook on the f-file to stop the king being checked away and allowing the Black king out of the corner...
Just goes to show, if you keep playing moves, sometimes something turns-up...

Re: Scottish 2011
Nice to have live games from the Scottish championship - and great thanks for that. Funny old chess today on the top 4 boards, though. One can understand the draw on board 2. Maybe on Board 3 Paul Roberts and Andrew Green know each other well or just think a quick draw gets an easier opponent tomorrow.
Anyway Craig looks well placed, having already played Keti. I guess Mr Sreeves will be a bit disappointed today but he's still doing really well. I don't understand Black's play on Board 4 - looks like he's been taking lessons from me.

I love sleep, I need 8 hours a day and about 10 at night - Bill Hicks
I would die happy if I beat Wood Green in the Eastman Cup final - Richmond LL captain.
Hating the Yankees since 2002. Hating the Jets since 2001.

Re: Scottish 2011
I'm here looking at the games live and then popping downstairs to watch the games live.
If both 'Grants' win then we will have a husband and wife sharing a national title.
I'm sure that has never happened before.

Is there a tie-break or any play-off in the case of first place being shared? I suspect Clement Sreeves would be one of the younger winners if he were to win and share first place...Geoff Chandler wrote:I'm here looking at the games live and then popping downstairs to watch the games live.

I was just looking at Arakhamia-Dempsey in this position - 6k1/5q1p/Q4Pp1/p2p4/3P4/5N1P/P5PK/2r5 b - - 0 45 - and thinking that Black has real problems defending against all of White's threats. But the engine found 45...Qc7+ 46 Ne5 and now 46...Rh1+!! and, incredibly, it turns out that Black has a perpetual check. There are some mind-bending variations which I won't bore you with. If Tony Dempsey finds this, I'll take my hat off to him.

Re: Scottish 2011
He played 45...Qd7 and now I think 46 Ne5 is more or less terminal. A missed opportunity but it would have been a miracle if he had worked out all those variations.

Re: Scottish 2011
Wow, I hadn't seen that either. Amazingly that idea was once used by Alex Holowczak to save his game in a Birmingham League match between Warley Quinborne and West Bromwich. I was that shocked I blundered into a mate soon afterJohn Saunders wrote:I was just looking at Arakhamia-Dempsey in this position - 6k1/5q1p/Q4Pp1/p2p4/3P4/5N1P/P5PK/2r5 b - - 0 45 - and thinking that Black has real problems defending against all of White's threats. Re: Scottish 2011
Kete soon mopped up, and her husband Jonathan agreed a draw shortly thereafter. So Kete Arakhamia wins the Scottish Championship again - well done to her.
