e2e4 Sunningdale Congress : 16-18 September 2011

Post by Sean Hewitt » Sun Sep 04, 2011 2:47 pm

The Sunningdale Congress will again take place over the weekend of Friday 16th to Sunday 18th September 2011.

The event will again take place at De Veres Sunningdale Hotel, Sunningdale Park, Larch Avenue, Ascot, Berkshire, SL5 0QE which is easily accessible by train from London and the South East as well as from both the M25 and M3 motorways.

We again have three sections which cater for all standards of player. The Open is FIDE rated (and ECF graded) as is the Major (open to players rated below 2000 or unrated players graded below 170) and the Minor (U140) will be ECF graded.

Bedrooms are rapidly selling so if you want to play and stay we suggest that you enter sooner rather than later.

Who's going?

Easy points available (from me) in the nether regions of the Open.

Yeah, and you didn't do too badly in the Open, Jonathan. Were you happy with the end result?

Happy enough. I certainly enjoyed the tournament as a whole, but I'm not sure you can be totally happy after the sort of epic knobbery that was my play in round 2.

Just played in my first e2e4 congress, thoroughly enjoyed myself – met some great people and played five interesting games in the major.
Of course it wouldn’t be a weekend congress without mistakes (not for me anyway) I managed to blunder in round four, turning a completely won game into a loss, then scored a victory in the final round from a losing position. Oh well, swings and roundabouts! :)

Congratulations to the organizers, it was extremely well run, and thanks to my opponents. I have plenty to look at and improve upon.
Hope to see you at an e2e4 event soon

Cheers
Trefor

43 Rg2!?

EDIT: 43.......Rxh4+ 44 Kg1 Qh5 should, indeed, win. But 45 Qxh4 Rxh4 46 Bxb8 might still give White swindling chances......

At any rate, it's better than what Jon played

One of the games I enjoyed watching the final few moves of at Sunningdale was this effort from Nick Pert in round 3. Quite a tactical slugfest:
