Stewart Reuben wrote:A columnist, a well-known chessplayer, for the Daily Express who was paid £60,000 a year. The surprise is that is all he received. Bill Hartston wrote Beachcomber and other material. The business about Latin America is nonsense if it referred to him.
Ah, that's a good spot. Stephen Moss of the Guardian was Tweeting that he thought he knew who Desmond was referring to, but it was neither a chess correspondent nor somebody based in Latin America. He didn't give a name though. But Stewart's guess looks pretty good to me, pending anything better.

The Latin America bit is a complete mystery though.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

I met Brian Leveson yesterday, for the first time and for about ten seconds. Should I have mentioned this to him? I don't know, the truth of the chess correspondent is probably not the main focus of the inquiry .....!

Are we assuming that the Guardian will not be replacing the Moss/King column?

Talking of which, has Sean Ingle been moved sideways? I was under the impression he was sports editor, but now he seems to be sports editor of Guardian online. Which might explain the change, if I've got any of that right.
