Michael Gove move not a demotion, says David Cameron

So is it an under-promotion?

No idea, but a chess picture has been used here (bishop and knight the wrong way round [Fischer Random chess?] and board the wrong way round as well):

(no mention of chess in the text as far as I can see)

[Off-topic, I see 'Baidu [Spider]' is browsing the forum! ]

Phil Liggett (who can always be relied upon for a stupid comment) today likened the Tour de France to a game of chess. I can't remember the exact quote.

Obviously it's nothing like a game of chess. That was proved last weekend when ITV4 showed a rider using his mobile phone during a stage. He wasn't immediately defaulted and thrown out of the race. On the other hand, he might have got his excuses from a chess player - he didn't mean to have it on him, he was only turning it off, and he was about to get rid of it in his team car.

There's chess-boxing on this thread every so often.

Here's a report about when the boxing got out of hand. A lesson for anyone tempted to attack the arbiter, or the arbiter for that matter.

Perhaps worth pointing out that the case continues.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Commentary from Mark James on today's play in the British Open shown on the BBC Website:-

16:29
"Rory has over powered it and taken a lot of bunkers out of play. He has had to hit driver to pretty small targets and that is not easy. He hits it 330 yards and straight down the middle. You can't play chess against someone with a machine gun."

That is not a problem that very many of us have encountered when playing club chess!

The most effective strategy I suppose would be to play the Sicilian Kalashnikov!

I've played the guy he splatted in the distant past and think Rajko is a pretty decent guy.

Although one of indeterminate age.

Well if its the same guy I played then he was 41 instead of 29 at the time according to his FIDE profile and would be 44 now.

Rajko Vujatovic is very pleant and I had little doubt that the other person was in the wrong. Bu I didn't comment while the trial was still in progress.

Somewhat unexpected: the Osbournes seated on a chessboard.
