A source tipped me off to a scene in a recent episode of The Only Way Is Essex in which two of the characters appeared to play chess. Purely in the interests of research, and to spare anyone else from having to investigate, I watched the brief segment. Having now had a stiff drink to recover from the experience, I am pleased to report that the board was the right way round and set up correctly, and what moves I could see were apparently legal. However, just as I was about to award top marks for the representation of chess on popular television, I spotted a black pawn on e8. So close...

About heavyweight boxer Wladimir Klitschko: "The 39-year-old Klitschko, whose brother is now mayor of Kiev, speaks four languages, has a PhD, plays chess and prefers order to chaos."

That's a good interview and article.

From that, there was a link to this earlier one, which is good as well:

There is a chess theme running all the way through the JulienTemple documentary, 'The Ecstasy Of Wilko Johnson' on BBC iPlayer. It is just one more reason why you should watch it. Look out for a glimpse of the Bell edition of Alekhine's Best Games.

Is that the same one as in A Matter of Life And Death?

"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Yes, it's one of the films used in the documentary - another is The Seventh Seal.

All the usual cliches. Absolutely cringeworthy.

It was not at all bad. Why always knock any attempt to put chess in the mainstream?
The piece about the singer was pobably more cliche-ridden.

The average audience for The One Show is over 4 million people according to BARB. Even if every competitive player in the country was watching (I'm pretty sure they weren't), over 99% of the audience were at most casual players. They saw a good-looking young man conduct an interview while winning a game of chess in under 30 seconds. Most of them will never have seen anything like it. Clichéd from the point of view of aficionados maybe - but it wasn't aimed at the likes of us. In the wider context it was excellent publicity.

What would be really great would be a follow-up report from the Classic.

To achieve that write in, and get others to do so, saying how good the programme was and how you would like to see another one about the LCC.
100 people doing so independently should be enough. For newspapers it was about 20. Find out the address.
