https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_Chess

Has anyone ever visited it and were they inspired to play some chess there?

I and some others walked along it to raise money for a chess event back in around 2001. Well, we didn't walk the entire length, but it was a whole afternoon of walking. Nice countryside.

There's a village in the Chess Valley called Sarratt which shares its name with one of England's leading chess players and writers in the late 18th/early 19th century, one of whose books was entitled, in some editions, Sarratt on Chess.

One of Sean Hewitt's e2e4 events back in 2009 (I think) played at Latimer House (played under Amersham) overlooks this river

So it has already been done, great venue and good weather allowing drinks on the terrace looking down at it

In Argentina: el Río Ajedrez.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

As well as being in the Chess Valley, I recall that that venue had one feature which made it particularly desirable for a chess event.

There was no mobile phone reception in the playing room.
