Would that be an abnormal way to spend the night?
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Easy to miss G5 approaching time control!

With four players on 4.5/5 I suspect that Emms-Howell, Gormally-Hawkins is the most likely.

Yes it looks as if Jones was looking for a sure draw, not dreaming he could beat a GM.

Already getting dodgy by then; Nd1 shows no sense of danger. 32 Rf1 lets the king breathe and if 32...Nxe3 33 fxe3 Qxe3 34 Qxf7. Or 32...f5 33 Qg3. So probably Black tries 32...h5 33 h3 f5 34 Qc4 Rf6 35 Kg1 when White remains two pawns up though under some pressure.

Our preliminary calculations suggest that Kalaiyalahan's win against Storey takes her over 2100 and therefore entitles her to the WFM title.

Can someone explain what happened in Kalavannan - Willow (lost by Black in 8 moves). The only explanation I can think of is the "phone going off" gambit.

The other one is a lost connection with the live board. The lack of clock times from move 6 is a possible clue.

OMH's comment is trivial and superficial. Tim's is more pertinent.

The point of this game, in contrast to the Golding-Arkell game, is how a very talented 11-yo sets about demolishing a strong amateur from the Black side. Of course, 'demolishing' only applies after errors towards the end. Hitherto, White was good when, having got Ne3 in, should have speedily set about business against f7.

The thing that struck me most forcibly, watching the game unfold, is how direct the play of Alex. The Rook lift - f8-a8-a6-f6 - to support the K-side initiative may pose no objective threat. But in practical terms, White's defence must be precise. Alas, in common with the rest of us competent but fallible amateurs, it wasn't. The relentless desire to attack by Alex Golding paid off, albeit in practical terms.

Make no mistake. We're looking at exceptional talent here - GM ability. I played a fine game, nearly forty years ago against Nigel Short full of direct attacking flair. Following Alex Golding's games, I see a similar identical talent. Marvellous
