At 5.40pm approx: Gormally stands much better (says engine); Flear winning; Keith recovered (opponent unaccountably failing to defend his extra pawn by ...e5) and now has a typical Keith ending; Hebden blundered knight and resigned; YouTube wasn't me either; can't watch the commentary this year.Carl Hibbard wrote:Gormally game interesting. Keith confused by Qf4. Hebden better. YouTube broken wasn't me.

Aaron Summerscale is winning easily, isn't he? (position after 38 Ba2)Jonathan Rogers wrote:All eyes on Summerscale v Golding, I trust

Too late; it's all over after ghastly 36...Rb8????? (36...Bf8 was good for Black says engine) and it was White in desperate time trouble.Jonathan Rogers wrote:All eyes on Summerscale v Golding, I trust

Yes, Golding was doing very well when I posted! There was also 34...Bxe6 earlier, with enormous compensation for the exchange and probably a close to winning position.
Madness in that game - and not just Alex throwing away a chance to beat his first GM by continuing to play at blitz speed, but also what Aaron was doing by allowing ...Nxc5 when he had built up a dominating position, we shall never know.
Ditto ...Na2 by Hebden.
Gormally seems to be emerging, relatively unsung, as the form player of the first week - just imagine, if he had seen his unexpeceted chance v Howell too ...

The Howell position looks horrid but I don't see anything specific.

Quite pleased to see David LeMoir amongst the group on 4.5. Played against him in 4NCL this past season, and he was a thoroughly nice gent.Tim Harding wrote:In the British 65+ Seniors there are already (according to results showing at 5.30pm) five players tied first on 4.5/6 and two more games in progress where winners could reach that score. This clearly shows that six rounds are insufficient.
There used to be seven rounds in the days before the age group split. I think ECF should reconsider for next year whether to run 65+ and 50+ in succession (how many people really want to play both?) and instead have both of them 7 rounds at least.

Beckett- Ward. White's light- squared bishop has gone f1- b5- c4- b5- c4- b3- c2 by move 21.

Horrid for Emms now (both scrambling last 15 moves to control on increments, Black P up, maybe winning R+ opposite colour Bs)Carl Hibbard wrote:The Howell position looks horrid but I don't see anything specific.
LATER: Emms didn't even reach move 40. At the end Howell is playing R-c4-b4 and Kxa3. I expect Emms felt insulted.

Re: British 2015 Round by Round
As is my wont, looking for interesting endgames after move 40, two candidates seem to be:
Kalavannan-Okhai (Black has R,B and two extra pawns versus Q; engine says better but could be hard to win);
Hill-Jackson, double minor piece ending with level pawns but White (better) having a think on move 41.
Most other ongoing games are either decided/nearly decided or boards not working.
I guess Gormally-Hawkins and Arkell-Weaver are the ones to learn from, though.

Howell sat for maybe 10 minutes considering his first move even though he seems always to be short of time?

I see 8.e4 in my game generated an awful lot of coverage on this thread. One can only imagine how much coverage it would have generated had I played it.

That's allowed of course; so he was only a few minutes late? My earlier comment was made under the impression that he had not arrived in the playing hall for over 10 minutes. That's the behaviour I consider reprehensible and disrespectful of opponents.Carl Hibbard wrote:Howell sat for maybe 10 minutes considering his first move even though he seems always to be short of time?

Hebden the ultimate professional was there early but sounded sick though cold flu type maybe.
