...Bc7 played, perhaps to enable ...Qa8 next move? These positions are rather obscure to me ...

Bc7/Qb8 is definitely thematic. Checking in Shipov's exceedingly thorough books though, this all normally seems to happen with an g2/f3/e4 pawn structure and the bishop on b1 or some such. Obvious 'sense' to it all then.

Not so sure about the whole plan when white's bishop starts on f1 to allow an easy g3, Bg2. At least there's still f3 to try and latch on to somehow.

I guess the other plan, if he is allowed to play a few moves for free, is to play ...Ne5 and then the other knight to h5-f4.

The Complete Hedgehog pair presumably, whose pristine green and brown shininess glints at me from a nearby shelf, reminding me to at least pretend to do some work on my repertoire this summer. Perhaps if I open them at a random page, that will count [deep weary sigh]

Yup. If it helps encourage you they're wonderfully easy books to just read :) Very well written/translated and an awful lot of terrifyingly complex positions.
(Pulling a coherent repetoire out of them would take quite a bit of work, but I fear that's the nature of the opening.).

Black can sometimes get d5 in usefully here I guess, or just mess about. This whole g5 thing isn't that committal by itself. The computer online fancied going h5,h4 which really *is* committal!

Well done

Are you confident about the top 3 now you have seen the openings?

Howell 0.5- 0.5 Pert
Flear 1-0 Gormally
Hawkins 1-0 Hill

I've no idea whats happening on board 1, or quite why they're both taking as long as they have been over their moves.

Flear is better against Gormally, I guess.

Hawkins winning.

14... Nd3 must be critical now in Howell - Pert; 15. Re3 Nb2 16. Qb3 Nd3 17. g4 looks like it could be fun :)

edit: 14...Qd7 played :(

David Howell seems to have a knack of dragging his opponents into mutual time scrambles to get to the time control.

Not sure there'll be a time scramble in this one, 19. dc6 Qc6 20. Nd5 looks horrible for Black.

Edit: not played, maybe Black is ok again now. I suppose you had to see the trick 19. dc6 Qc6 20. Nd5 Nc7 (only move, I think) 21. Bg7! (f4 first might be stronger), but it's not an especially difficult line.

If the clocks are correct David's got 18 moves playing on increment.
