finding work in the UK

Post by soheil_hooshdaran » Thu Oct 08, 2015 6:54 pm

Hello
Can I find a work as a chess coach in the UK from outside the UK? How?
I am even willing to play in a chess league there

Thanks for your answer

What is your rating?

It has dropped to 1736, but I can work more on chess to restore my rating to 1900+ level.

I won prizes in different tournaments. This is the last one:

(The 2nd one from the left.)
It belongs to 2012-Nowrooz cup in Esfahan. I won the U1900 prize. At the time I was 1857.

Sorry Soheil but we have loads of unemployed people with grades higher than that so you won't get in.

If you become a qualified primary or secondary school teacher you'd have some options there, otherwise you need to increase your rating by about 1000 points to find the work you are after.

About 1000 may be slightly overstating it, tbf. Slightly......

There are much lower rated players teaching chess in schools.

Indeed, and some barely know the moves themselves.

Yes it is very surprising that some people who teach are so weak.

Not really. Teaching is about communication of knowledge, that is more important than ability itself if we are talking about learning the moves. Once the children become better than their teacher then they need someone with a higher ability.

Finding someone who teaches chess well and has a strong ability itself is rather difficult, you usually get one or the other. If you look at the Chess in Schools website and info, you will find such commiserations there.

If you think that you probably shouldn’t be looking to work in the field. It depends on the exactly what you’re doing, of course, but if you’re introducing children to chess (in school or elsewhere) your playing strength isn’t particularly important. Obviously the stronger the student(s) the strong you would need to be.

Your main issue is going to be getting a working visa, I suspect.

Depends what you mean by "strong ability" but Chris Ward springs to mine as a GM who’s excellent with kids from beginner level. In general, though, I think you must be right.
