List of British Triumphs

Post by Colin Patterson » Tue Apr 25, 2017 4:00 pm

A good few years ago, on the old BCF website, there existed a document listing successful performances by British players and teams. More specifically, competitions where medals were at stake ... I assume the purpose was to show how BCF funding had been used to benefit national representatives; typically at World/European junior and youth events, Olympiads, European Teams, Solving competitions, etc. I think the document simply listed the year, event, person or team, colour of medal. From memory, the list's final entries went up to about 1998 and seemed very comprehensive.

Does anyone remember it? If anyone has a copy and can post a .jpg or .doc here, I would be most grateful!

It would also be nice to see something like that up and running again, updated for the last (circa) 20 years.

Panic over. Title was 'FIDE Honours' - I found it on an archive site at http://archive.li/BULlt#selection-331.0-3493.13

In fact it was last updated in 2002/3. Surprising how many honours had been won. Would be interesting to see how it would look updated for the last 14 years? Maybe not a lot different!?

http://www.olimpbase.org/ has records for team events... There's Michael Adams, Board 1 Gold, European Team Championships 2011.

Yes, aside from Mickey's Olympiad medal, I was struggling to think of too many others.

Josh Altman in 2012, took Bronze at the World Youth Under 10.
Keith Arkell of course, in 2014, took Gold at the European Senior 50+, then Silver at the World Senior 50+ ...

Any others spring to mind?

There are other medal winners such as

Michael Adams Gold board 1 European Team 2011
Jovanka Houska Silver board 1 European Team 2015
John Nunn 2014 World Senior Bronze 50+
Also worth a mention is Ravi Haria, in the U12 World Youth in 2011 he tied for third but lost out on tiebreak - getting a medal for 6th place (Yang Fan Zhou also had received a 6th place medal that year in the U18 - joint 5th)

Extending the range of competitions there have been other successes such as

Nigel Short Commonwealth Gold 2004,2006,2008
Gawain Jones Commonwealth Gold 2011
Jovanka Houska Commonwealth Gold 2013
Colin Crouch silver medals in 2008 and 2012 at international chess Olympiads for blind and visually impaired people

There have also been other successes in the World/European Schools events and EU Youth championships and also of course the problem solving success with John Nunn for example. Also I am sure there are a number of others but if someone does have time it would be nice for a list to be maintained.

Why not consult the ECF YearBook? You will find all international honours listed there. I think you will also find it somewhere on the ECF site. It did not take long to compile and sometimes more recently one or two may have been overlooked. The Golden Book of FIDE was invaluable.

Thanks Stewart. I've not got the ECF Yearbooks unfortunately, but if I'm ever passing a specialized chess library I may well call in and check them out.

I would certainly welcome an update of the FIDE Golden Book for the 2003-2017 era ... but I suspect it's not likely.

Colin. You could break down and buy a copy of the YearBook, or even become a member at the appropriate level.
Willy Iclicki is working on a new edition. He has yet to send it to me to proof read.

Stewart,
Re: New edition of FIDE Golden Book.
Good news indeed. I'll look forward to that, as long as getting hold of a copy is easier than was the case with the first edition!
