Re: Ewart J. SMITH
I knew Ewart relatively well, having played him in tournaments and the Berkshire League several times, but most importantly through chatting to him after the games. He was a kind man wth a dry sense of humour and met triumph and disaster with complete equanimity. I liked him

Re: Which are considered the best books written on the art of sacrificing material?
Vukovic seems to be getting it in the neck in this discussion, including the pejorative use of 'classic' in quotation marks. 'The Chess Sacrifice' was one of the earlier books I read when starting to play chess. I liked it then and I like it now. It was a seminal work in it's time, and for many year...

Basman at least assigned names to openings that didn't, as far as I know (although I'm waiting to be debunked!), already have them.

Re: Chess ahead of Astrology on YouGov poll
Since when has been watching films been a cerebral activity? It depends what films you're talking about, John. If you watch films by auteur directors like Tarkovsky, Bergman, Dreyer, Hitchcock and Nolan to name but five, you need to be paying close attention to get the best out of the films. There ...

Re: Event Cancellation
I'm just adding my voice to the others. I've always enjoyed playing in the Guernsey Chess Festival, not least because of the sterling efforts of Peter Rowe and Fred Hamperl. I too hope this isn't the end of a wonderful tournament.

Re: Kevin Hawkins
I'm very sad to hear this shocking news. I played Kevin 5 times over a 23-year period, and of course saw him in many other matches against Bourne End. He was a real chess enthusiast who loved attacking play, and was a very nice man. My commiserations to his family, and to his friends, and especially...
